Name: Crafty Dan 13 Guns
Style: American IPA
Description: Crafty Dan Micro Brewery is a microbrewery in Lancashire, England and are an off shoot of the parent brewery, Thwaites.
The beer is described as an American IPA, but although it has some elements, it doesn’t really feel like one.
The smells as you would expect from an American IPA, full of tropical fruit (grapefruit, mango) and pine but the beer is somewhat lacking in alcoholic punch at only 5.5%. The malt aroma comes through to (unlike some American IPAs).
The maltiness and the creaminess is what is really first noticed when drinking this beer: it’s very much on the sweet side. It’s a smooth beer that feels nice and British, with a great mouth feel. This is followed up by some fruitiness and a dry bitter finish. It’s just not as dry or bitter as you would expect form an American IPA.
To me, it feels more like an English IPA with American Hops rather than an American style IPA, having said that it is great to drink.
